Refrigerants are Hazardous to our Environment and Lead to Global Warming
Monday, December 22nd, 2008Most of us use air conditioners in our homes and offices. Air conditioners provide us with a cool environment in the room. Many of us while using air conditioners remain concerned only about comfort but do not really care about effect on the environment. In order to cool a room, a refrigerant is used in an air conditioning system. A refrigerant absorbs heat from the room and converts it into cool air; this cool air is then circulated inside the room.
Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) is one of the refrigerants which were previously used in air conditioning units. It was found late in 1970 that CFCs are hazardous for environment and are also responsible for ozone layer depletion and global warming.
Ozone gas is present in the Earth’s atmosphere. It protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays. If ozone layer breaks down for to any reason then there are more chances that we may come in direct contact with ultra violet rays. These ultra violet rays cause skin cancer, eye cataracts, skin burning and many other ailments.
Ozone is a compound which is made up of 3 molecules of oxygen. Compounds containing chlorine always lead to depletion in ozone level. Chlorine molecule from the refrigerant removes 1 oxygen atom from ozone and converts it into oxygen. If CFCs are used in air conditioners for a longer period, it will eventually lead to depletion of ozone layer.
