Energy efficient and environmentally friendly air conditioners important for everyone

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

There has been a rise in temperature all over the globe because of global warming. This has created concerns about the use of cooling and refrigerant systems that can have adverse effects on the environment.

As air conditioning units are becoming more and more affordable, purchasing the right type of air conditioning is not only important for energy efficiency but also for protecting the environment.

An air conditioning unit provides great relief from the heat of summer. Air conditioning units make an indoor environment more comfortable, especially in a place like the office, where they help employees work more efficiently.

Another place where having an air conditioners is very important is in the mechanical industry. Employees prefer working in a cool and comfortable environment. There are many advantages to installing air conditioning units in an industrial set up. The machines will never get over-heated and server rooms will always be cool. It also reduces the maintenance cost of machinery and increases their life span.

Industrial air conditioners have a higher capacity compared to residential air conditioners. There are many reasons for this. The size of a commercial space is generally much larger compared to a residential place. Also, there tends to be a larger number of people in a commercial place than in a residential place.

Air conditioning for good health

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Many people think that air conditioning makes you ill. If it is well maintained, air conditioning only contributes to an improved environment.

Air conditioning controls humidity levels in the air. As all of us know, a humid atmosphere is a breeding ground for the moulds, mites and dust which cause allergies. Air conditioning controls humidity to levels of 40 to 60 % and prevents mites and moulds from multiplying. This prevents people suffering from different allergies

Ventilation is another factor that is of great importance for good health. Mechanical ventilation is becoming vital for health because of changing construction technology. Air conditioning ensures fresh air, which in turn gives protection against sickness.

Taking care of ventilation alone is not enough. You must also make sure that the air which you breathe is clean. Air conditioning units are provided with an air filter.
There are different types of filters used on various types of air conditioning systems. The filter arrests dust particles, bacteria pollen and odours. It even filters smoke and microbes. so the air is made cleaner for breathing. However, if you do not clean the filter regularly or replace it from time to time, you will only be risking attacks from bacteria and other pollutants.

It is wrong to think that air conditioning makes you sick or causes illness. It only serves you by providing clean and cool air, taking care of your health.

Problems you can encounter if you forget to clean and change filters

Monday, September 29th, 2008

If your air conditioner has been working non stop through the summer, it is time you considered attending to your air filter that made your life comfortable through the last few months. If you forget to change your air filters, you might end up making your air conditioning unit less efficient and even pollute the air inside your room.

When you look at the air filter you have not changed in months, you will find that it has dirt stuck all over it and is collapsing from suction. The frame goes out of shape and detaches itself from the housing surface as the filter begins to collapse. The filter pulls away further as it continues to become dirty.

Some air will be pulled through the filter during this problem. However, more unfiltered air will pass through the gap between the housing and the frame. This unfiltered air will be sucked into the evaporator along with the dirt. Some of the dirt will even stick to the evaporator because it is cold and wet. Some will stick to the surface inside the ductwork and the remainder will be sent back into the room.

A mould farm could form if the evaporator is left dirty and the system will have to run longer to cool the room which will result in using more electricity. The worst case would be the system freezing up and being unable to cool at all. Such situations would prove to be more expensive than regularly cleaning or changing the air filters of your air conditioning unit.

Sanyo knows that designing and preparing a VRF can be costly as well as time consuming, so they have designed special software which will enable fast and easy usage.

R-410A - one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

The usage of R-410A refrigerant has recently been started in air conditioning units and heat pumps. It has replaced refrigerants like R-22 which are being phased out. R-410A refrigerant can be used in newer and older models of air conditioning units and heating systems.

Unlike R-22, R-410A refrigerant does not have any effect on the ozone layer. In addition to this, the compressors of air conditioners and other cooling products have become smaller because of R-410A refrigerant, as the heat exchanger can be reduced in size. The efficiency of it is the same as for R-22 refrigerant.

Its environmental impact has been studied extensively. Research has shown that R-410A refrigerant is a perfect replacement gas for overall safety of the environment. R-410A refrigerant is likely to be used in the long term as it provides the lowest impact on global warming and is an ozone safe gas.

Some changes have to be made in the compressor of air conditioning systems before R-410A refrigerant can be used in it. The new air conditioning units that use R-410A are much more energy efficient and environment friendly than the older air conditioning systems.

Proper upkeep of air conditioners makes them more efficient

Friday, September 26th, 2008

By keeping your air conditioners properly maintained, you can increase the efficiency and longevity of the unit. Proper maintenance of air conditioning units can increase their life span by up to 15 years. An air conditioner is an appliance that needs regular maintenance and upkeep. You should always get your air conditioner checked by a professional technician every two to three years.

You too should allow some time and check the hose of the air conditioner for leakage problems. While cleaning the hose, always make sure that the condensate tube is draining freely. By changing and cleaning the furnace filter every month you can protect hazardous effects from the air conditioner caused by dust and allergens.

You should clean the outside compressor of the air conditioner unit with the help of a hose. By getting the ductwork cleaned regularly by a professional, you can ensure proper upkeep of the air conditioning unit. One thing that you should always keep in mind if you have an air conditioning unit is that you should shut off the power from the service panel whenever you try to clean it.

For rooms with a central forced air furnace, do not close off the heat registers in an unoccupied room. Heating systems are designed for heating specific areas of living space and it will continue to work. All the vents, registers and radiators should have enough room to breathe.

Important considerations to make while buying an air conditioner

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Purchasing an air conditioning unit is not easy. There are several factors that you have to keep in mind when purchasing an air conditioning unit. An air conditioner is a one time investment, so you should think soundly about the type of air conditioner that you want to purchase. There are several different factors that you should keep in mind while selecting an air conditioner, as follows:

•    Installation
•    Energy efficiency
•    Size of the air conditioner
•    Operational factors
•    Sound factors

Purchase an air conditioning unit with a high SEER. The cooling efficiency of a central air conditioner gets affected by the manufacturer’s choice of components along with the unit’s features. The SEER of air conditioners ranges from a minimum of 10 SEER to 17 SEER.

After purchasing an air conditioning unit, always make sure that you locate the outdoor unit in a cool, shaded place and always fix the air conditioner in a place where the sound of the air conditioner will not be of concern for anyone.

The cooling load has to be decided by a qualified air conditioning contractor. Always select an air conditioner that meets your cooling load. If you have purchased a central air conditioner, you should keep in mind that proper ventilation is a must for proper cooling.

Why purchasing a new air conditioner is a better option

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Commercial organisations and offices need an air conditioner so that employees can work more efficiently, but if such places have older air conditioning systems; it will cost them more in terms of operating expenses. You should get a new air conditioner in commercial premises as it will be beneficial for you in the long term.

There are many high efficiency air conditioning units available nowadays that are very energy efficient. Newer models of air conditioning systems are far better in quality. By getting newer air conditioners installed, you could save almost 50% on your energy bills. Older air conditioners have a much lower SEER when compared to the newer air conditioning units.

Outdoor condensers and compressors of new air conditioners make little noise when compared to older air conditioning systems. For home owners, the efficiency of air conditioners depends upon the climate and condition of the place. If the room has broken windows, poor ductwork and inadequate insulation then the air conditioner will not function at its peak performance rate.

By purchasing a new air conditioning unit, you will not only help yourself but also help the environment. When purchasing an air conditioner, ensure that you purchase a unit which uses refrigerant that does not cause any harm to the ozone layer.

Things like ozone depletion, global warming and energy depletion are important aspects to be considered when looking for an air conditioning unit. New air conditioners are designed in a way that minimises the possibility of refrigerant leakage.

The benefits of new air conditioning refrigerants

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Nearly every home, office, private and public place makes use of air conditioners today. When installing an air conditioning unit, it is important to look at the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio). The SEER of an air conditioning unit is calculated by dividing the cooling capacity of the unit with the electrical input required to power it. The higher the SEER rating of the air conditioner, the more efficient the unit will be. This will result in lower electricity bills.

All air conditioners run on a refrigerant called Freon that helps cool the air. Presently the government is slowly phasing out the use of air conditioners that run on R-22 as it is an ozone depleting agent. By 2010, government will disallow the manufacture of air conditioners that use R-22. After 2009, all air conditioning units will be manufactured to run on R-410A, which is a non ozone depleting refrigerant. There are some manufacturers that are already selling air conditioners running on R-410A.

The production of air conditioning units that use R-22 will continue till 2020. After that all air conditioners using R-22 will be serviced with recycled R-22. Air conditioners using R-22 systems will not be able to be converted into R-410A systems. This is because the pressure used to run an R-410A system is almost twice as much as that used to run the traditional R-22 one. R-410A air conditioning units are environmentally friendly and these units and components are specially designed to take this kind of pressure.

R-410A refrigerant has a lower impact on global warming

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

R-410A is a high pressure and high capacity refrigerant that does not cause any harm to the ozone layer. R-410A is a refrigerant that is being used in air conditioners recently because of the phase out of the R-22 refrigerant. R-410A does not have any ill effects on the ozone layer like R-22. Air conditioners that use R-410A refrigerant have a smaller compressor displacement.

The heat exchangers of air conditioners can be reduced in size if they use the R-410A refrigerant. The efficiency of the air conditioner is the same as the R-22 based units.  R-410A has a capacity and pressure similar to R-22. It is a refrigerant that has a temperature glide that can lead to greater concern about composition control during the time of installation and servicing.  R-410A refrigerant will be a long term refrigerant solution as it provides the lowest impact on global warming.

The R-410A refrigerant can be used in both newer and older models of air conditioning and heating systems. The impact of the R-410A refrigerant has been studied extensively. Research has shown that R-410A refrigerants are the perfect replacement for overall environmental safety. Few changes have to be done in the compressor of the air conditioner when using R-410A refrigerant.

The efficiency of the compressor has been determined from the average performance of R-410A refrigerant scroll compressors by major compressor manufacturers.

At normal and low condensing temperature, a compressor’s performance makes up for the decrease in thermodynamic efficiency of R410-A relative to R-22.
