Extra effort and vigilance needed to reduce global warming
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009Recent reports have suggested that other harmful pollutants besides CO2 might also be a potential threat to our environment. CO2 is definitely harmful and is one of the major causes of the global warming phenomenon. However, other gases might also be contributing to global warming
The study suggests that about 26 percent of carbon emissions are caused due to home stoves. This is indeed a shocking claim.
Till now, a lot has been said and done to curb potentially harmful human activities to protect the environment. According to the Montreal Protocol, countries agreed to prohibit the usage of CFCs in household equipment. CFCs have previously been used on a large scale in air conditioners and refrigerators as coolants. Such substances affect the ozone layer.
The implementation of the protocol has in fact helped to reduce ozone depletion levels by a considerable amount. Massive damage might have been caused to the atmosphere in the absence of such a protocol.
The world’s ecosystem could have been harmed even more through continuing use of such chemicals. The Montreal Protocol has also played a major role in preventing a major climatic change.
However, as mentioned, CO2 is not the only reason for global warming. Other harmful gases like nitrogen compounds, carbon emissions and other pollutants also contribute to global warming on a major basis.
Individuals should curb the use of such gases at grass-roots level. They should also avoid practices such as the cutting and burning of trees and wood, which can also contribute to global warming.
