Improvements in refrigerants used by cooling systems
As most manufacturers are introducing air conditioning systems which use R-410A as a refrigerant, it has become essential for the buyer to know the facts surrounding it. Many manufacturers have realised that R-410A refrigerants have some excellent features to offer. R-410A refrigerants make air conditioning units an effective and environmentally friendly appliance.
From the late 1980s, it has been well documented that the ozone layer, which surrounds the earth is depleting. Ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons are used as aerosol propellants and refrigerants.
It has been found that chlorine in the CFC refrigerant contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer. The Montréal protocol on substances that cause harm to the ozone layer was negotiated and signed by the European Union and other like minded countries in 1987. The agreement calls for all parties to scale down the use of CFCs, halons and other ozone harmful substances.
Due to legislation on R-22 refrigerants, they have been virtually phased out in all new air conditioner units that are manufactured now. The air conditioning industry uses HFC refrigerants because they do not contribute to the damage to the ozone layer. HFCs do not have any chlorine content and have zero ozone depletion potential.
