Why you should use R-22 replacement gases
Most air conditioning units which are more than six years old contain R-22, and they are also driven by a fixed speed compressor. R-22 is a refrigerant which is also commonly used in other devices. Countries across the world have banned the use of R-22, as it has a detrimental effect on the environment.
R-22 has a large impact on the ozone layer, is one of the main contributors to global warming. This is why all R-22 based systems need to be replaced with alternatives. These replacements are not harmful to environment and they also help to save energy by as much as 70%.
R-22 alternatives
Currently, you will find various alternatives such as R404A, R407C, R290, R417A and also R410A. If you are selecting an alternative for R-22 then you need to be careful and make sure that the unit supports the alternative refrigerant. Nowadays, many manufacturers are opting for R401A refrigerants, as they are easy to use and don’t affect the ozone layer.
Other than R410A, R417A is a common replacement R-22, as it can be easily used in the same compressor which is manufactured for R-22. Additionally, even R290 - pure propane can be used, as it is a natural hydrocarbon which has properties similar to R-22.
So, if you are planning on buying new air conditioning units, you need to opt for refrigerants other than R-22.
